About Halle
Halle, the city on the Saale river and with 240,000 the largest of the Federal State of Sachsen-Anhalt, is situated in Mitteldeutschland (Middle Germany). Halle's early history is connected with harvesting of salt. The town was first mentioned in 806. According to historic documents, the city of Halle has been a member of the hanseatic league at least since 1281.
The famous Baroque composer George Friedrich Händel was born in Halle in 1685, where he spent the first 17 years of his life. The house where he lived is now a museum and houses an exhibition about his life. To celebrate the composer, Halle stages an annual Handel festival every June. The famous American painter Lyonel Feininger has painted a series of motifs in Halle in the style of Cubism, some of which are exhibited in the Moritzburg State Gallery.
The University of Halle was founded here in 1694. It is now combined with the University of Wittenberg and is called the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg. The local medical school was founded by Friedrich Hoffmann.The university's botanical garden, the Botanische Garten der Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, dates back to 1698.

The music museum is dedicated to the famous musician Georg Friedrich Händel, who was born in this building in 1685.

The Landesmuseum für Vorgeschichte belongs to the largest and oldest museums for pre-historic archeology in Germany. It has got a major collection of archeological objects.

The Geiseltalmuseum presents objects found during brown coal mining in the Geiseltal south of Halle. The most famous object is the complete skeleton of a pre-horse mammal.

Franckesche Stiftungen
The Francke Foundations, founded in 1698, include a baroque library from 1728, school buildings from four centuries, the largest half-timbered house in Europe, as well as the only cabinet of artefacts and curiosities still in its original setting.

Moritzburg
Fortified castle from the early Renaissance, built in 1484 as bishop´s residence, hosts the Art Museum of the state of Sachsen-Anhalt.
Alter Markt
The Old Market is one of the most beautiful places of the city, with the donkey fountain and the Moritz Church.
Hallescher Dom
The oldest sacral building, first built as Dominican monastery church in 1300.

In order to capture the visionary ideas and goals of the Bauhaus, the exhibition portrays the relationships between education, the arts, architecture, product design, and between the people and their lives at, and with, the Bauhaus. The exhibition focuses chiefly on the Dessau period of the Bauhaus.
