Erfurt is the capital city of the Free State of Thuringia and looks back on more than 1270 years of history and has one of the best preserved medieval city centers in Germany. St Mary‘s Cathedral and the Church of St Severus, the Merchants‘ Bridge (Krämerbrücke), the Petersberg Citadel and the Old Synagogue are some of the highlights.
The city always attracted great minds, such as Goethe, Schiller, Bach, Liszt, and Luther, who studied in Erfurt and later lived as a monk at the Monastery of St Augustine’s from 1505 until 1511. Pope Benedikt XVI discussed the ecumenicity with the prostestant bishops on September 23, 2011 in this monastery. The Meeting will be held at this unique monument.
Erfurt University was founded in 1392, closed in 1816, re-opened in 1994, and is now the third oldest university of Germany.
